Getting started
How to record your screen on Windows 11
Prepare a private workspace, capture a short task with Snipping Tool, and check the saved recording before sharing it.
Choose a small task first
A useful first recording shows one action and its result: changing a notification setting, adding a calendar event, or exporting a report. Avoid beginning with a full tour of your desktop. Write down the starting screen and the final state so you know when to stop.
Use a demonstration account and harmless sample data. Close messages and password managers, dismiss notifications, and check browser tabs, bookmarks and account names. A selected recording area reduces exposure, but anything that appears inside it can still be captured.
Capture with the built-in tool
- Open Snipping Tool from Start and choose Record, then New. On supported installations, Windows + Shift + R opens the recording overlay.
- Select the area that contains the task, including any menus that need to appear. Keep it large enough for the result, but avoid unrelated desktop space.
- Check the available audio controls and select only the inputs you need. Controls can vary with the installed app version.
- Start the recording, let the interface settle, perform the action, and pause briefly on the result.
- Stop, review the clip and save it to a location you can find again. Open the saved file rather than relying only on the preview.
If recording mode is missing, check Windows and Microsoft Store updates for Snipping Tool. Microsoft's Snipping Tool guide describes the available capture modes.
Check what the viewer will see
Play the file at the size your recipient is likely to use. If they must enlarge it to identify a menu item, increase application or browser text size and record again. Enlarging a finished video also enlarges its blur.
Listen with headphones. Confirm that the intended narration is present, private background conversation is absent, and notification sounds do not interrupt the task. For a silent explanation, write accompanying steps so the clip does not depend on an inaudible verbal instruction.
Example: to show how to enable an email notification, start on the settings screen, open the relevant section, enable the option, save it, and leave the confirmation visible. Do not end immediately after the click.
When you need more editing control
If you need cursor effects or a timeline, evaluate a recorder/editor with those controls. CapTrik's source includes display/window capture, cursor settings, trim controls and export, but check verified build availability before planning around it. Its recording guide describes the implementation and limitations.
A black recording can indicate source selection, permissions or protected content. Test a plain non-sensitive application before changing several settings. For silence, test microphone and system sound separately. The troubleshooting guide gives a symptom-based sequence.
Your first recording is complete when the saved file opens, the task is understandable, and no private information remains. Then share a copy and keep the source until the recipient confirms it works.
